The Story of Bhūti and Śānti is a simple and concise narrative leading back to the Vedic Mind. Two forest dwellers: a ṛṣi named Bhūti and an apprentice named Śānti work together tending the fire in the forest hermitage. Bhūti, whose name means Possessor of Manifest Power, desires a successor. Śānti, whose name means Peaceful one, is an advanced student struggling to feel the last, subtlest steps beneath his feet on the path to becoming Bhautya, the successor of Bhūti. In efforts to achieve this, Bhūti harshly points out Śānti's every little mistake. This struggle reaches a climax when Bhūti tells Śānti to tend the fire of the hermitage while Bhūti is away to join his brother Suvarcas in a fire ceremony. After Bhūti leaves, the fire goes out. Out of desperation, Śānti spontaneously sings out to Agni the eponymous hymn of this story, the Agni Stotram. Below you'll find a word-for-word translation of the Agni Stotram.
